Introduction to World of Warcraft Engineering
by Marcus Ty
Engineering is the one World of Warcraft profession that I came late to in the game. I had been put off by those players who had tried to master the art of the mechanical but found it to be very a expensive profession, consuming large amounts of gold for very little gain in experience. Having now reached the level of Grand Master and made many a cool device, I can highly recommend Engineering as a profession that will enhance your game all the way through to the Wrath of the Lich King.
Engineering in World of Warcraft is one of the primary professions; that is, it counts as one of two primary profession that a player can learn. To be successful at Engineering, and to help you save a heap of gold coin, it's advisable to choose Mining as your remaining primary profession. This is because Engineering is a crafting profession and will consume vast amounts of metals. Miners gather mineral ores and smelt them into metals which can them be used for Engineering. As a general rule, it's always best to pair a crafting profession (one that consumes materials) with a gathering profession (one that produces material).
Engineering is taught by one of the many trainers in any of the major cities in Azeroth. If you can't find one, simply ask a guard who will show you the way. Now any class or race of player can become an Engineer, but if you have opted to play a Gnome then your character comes with a passive Engineering skill increase of 15. In fact a Gnomes racial mount is a Mechanostrider - looks a bit like a mechanical Ostrich. It will be interesting to see if Goblins get the same advantage in Cataclysm.
To get to a skill level of Expert in Engineering is not that hard provided you have Mining as your gathering profession. Most of the recipes are geared to the creation of explosives which require mainly the products of mining ores at the same level namely Copper, Tin, Rough Stone, Course Stone and Linen Cloth. You'll also need some gems in the form of Moss Agate which will normally drop when mining.
Now even at a skill level of Expert, Engineers can craft some useful - if not wacky - items. My favorite is the Explosive Sheep which is easy to make at a skill level of 150 and allows you to summon an an explosive sheep which will charge a nearby enemy and explode for 135 to 165. It can be hysterical to watch.
Other more useful items crafted at this level are guns and scopes which can easily be sold on the Auction House for some profit. Combining a scope and gun normally makes the item irresistible to buyers.
So, if you haven't tried Engineering in the World of Warcraft yet, and have Mining as a profession, then why not train and give it a try. I give more hints and tips on the professions on my website which can be found in the links below.
