Scammers and Trust Issues in World of Warcraft

by Sean McFall

Thousands of scammers strike every month, trying to find the weakest victims they can and prey on their willingness to believe anything they hear online. These scammers rely on the hope by people like you that most everyone online is nice and legitimate in their claims. They prey on your weaknesses and your niceties and then manipulate you into giving them your items, gold or account. It's the most basic kind of scam around, but it also the most dangerous and humiliating.

There are instances when a particularly nice female character might claim to like you and only want a little help in the game. She will sweet talk you and claim to want to meet up in real life. However, such claims are rarely ever true and should be backed up with more substantial proof than a fruitful conversation and a couple of pictures.

Other scammers will create false guilds and pretend they are gathering your information for use in guild operations. When you sign up for the forum or hand over your character information, they will use it against you for their own purposes. If you ever use your World of Warcraft user name and password on a forum site of this kind, you are likely giving your information away to a scammer. You've just lost your account because you trusted a stranger.

Recognizing a scammer is not always as easy as it sounds though. They are smooth talkers and have a lot of practice getting people to trust them. With a decent amount of practice and careful study though, you can eventually learn how to tell the standard game character from the smooth talking scammer with ease. Generally, you can gather a lot from how someone answers questions. Most people are casual and offhanded. A scammer will have carefully selected and scripted answers. Other scammers will just not answer. If anything seems suspicious, one way or another, flag them and be wary of their intentions.

Scammers always offer you a deal that seems a bit too good to be true. Because you often do not know the person you are dealing with, these offers should seem suspicious right away. Why would a stranger offer you 5 gold off of a stack of Rune Cloth when you do not know them? Be wary of how they practice business and what they offer. Friends make nice offers; scammers are always working an angle.

Be wary of anyone that claims to have been scammed themselves. This is a common method of gaining trust, but most people won't bring up scamming at all unless they are wary of you trusting them. If they do, be careful as they are trying too hard to gain your trust. Look for people to vouch for their deal, particularly people you know.
