Getting Started With Mining in World of Warcraft

Of the twelve major professions in World of Warcraft, mining is one of the most versatile and ultimately profitable of them all. When you become a miner, you will be gathering dozens of different and valuable minerals for use by blacksmiths and engineers. On occasion, many miners will opt to become a blacksmith or engineer as well, combining the minerals they gather with another profession. It's not a requirement though.
The first step is to find the all powerful mining trainer. Like any profession, you must find the guy in charge and ask for training. After basic training, buy a pick from a local trade merchant - likely nearby your trainer. After training is complete, you'll have acquired the all powerful "find minerals" button on your task bar and be able to search the landscape for ore to mine. It's time to get started.
Don't expect to just randomly find these mineral veins though. They are scattered throughout the countryside, but require a careful eye and specific attention. Look in mountainous areas, quest areas, and mines. Caves are also popular locations for mining. Beware of following the find minerals button too carefully as it might be pointing above or below your current position.
There are more than a dozen minerals you can mine, including: copper, tin, incendicite, silver, bronze, iron, indrium, gold, lesser bloodstone, steel, mithril, truesilver, dark iron, small, thorium, and rich thorium. You cannot find all of these items where ever you go though. At first, no matter where you start, you are only going to find copper. After a while, when you upgrade to areas like Westfall, you might begin to find Tin, but it will be a long while before you reach the level of mining as well as the character level needed to travel where you'd find Thorium.
One of the most interesting things you can do with your mineral finds though is to create new minerals from what you've already collected. Bronze for example can be made from Tin and Copper. Coal and Iron create Steel and so on. The ability to create new minerals is a great way to make more money and raise your mining skill through practice. The higher you raise your mining skill, the more kinds of minerals you can mine and later refine.
The only important thing to keep in mind with mining, as with any gathering profession is the professional etiquette you should display to other miners in the area. If you approach a mining site and there is another character already there, make sure you are not taking their find. Equally, ensure that you do not take a mineral site when they are busy fighting a monster. It is possible to quickly and easily anger your fellow players by being rude and that just ruins the fun of the game.
